The billboard in the photo above is now on I-70 near the Denver Dog Show Venue…..
“Adoption for a fee” with many donation-funded animal rescues is actually “buying under contract” and being held hostage by the contract after you’ve put hundreds or thousands of dollars into your adopted animal, but have to give the “rescue” first right of refusal to take the animal back before you can give the animal away, or sell them as personal property animal owners are allowed to do, no matter how long you’ve had the animal, no matter what training you’ve put into them, no matter what ?…….
And although we’re all for adopting from an animal control, animal services, or animal shelter, and have done so many times over the past 45+ years, some people just really want a purebred dog, cat, or even a horse and/or they want a history on the animal they will be BUYING.
Adoption Contracts and Agreements:
Many people also are not “into” adoption contracts if they get an animal from a rescue.
The rescue may have just “pulled” the dog or cat from AC, or perhaps just forced an animal owner into a surrender of animals, or there was a seizure of animals, because of a “social media madness mob” let loose on the animal owner, perpetrated and orchestrated by a donation-funded rescue “into” doing “crisis rescuing”, collecting bushel barrels of donation money, and getting animals entirely for free, so the “rescue” has little, or no history on the animal being offered for adoption.
Then there are also the high adoption fee’s many rescues charge for the animal, and when the high adoption fee is combined with little or no history for the animal, it leads many people to just buy an animal from a breeder and not a animal trader/broker/dealer posing as a “rescue”.
Legitimate Breeders and Local, Regional, State, and Federal Licensing:
Consider also that a legitimate dog and/or cat breeder also has to “jump through a lot of hoops” in terms of licensing and inspections because not all dog and cat breeders are considered equal.
Additionally, breeders who under the regulations of their city/town, county, or state may not be required to be licensed by the federal government may be required to obtain a license and have an inspection by their local municipality. Each town, county and state is different.
These breeders, who are often breeding for fewer litters, will also have periods of time where no breeding occurs that spans years sometimes, thus the reason they are not required to be licensed with federal agencies.
An observation from a dog owner who is not a dog breeder:
“In many ways, buying from a breeder versus a shelter is like buying a new car or home versus used. If you must buy used, you’ll generally get the best deal straight from the owner, rather than through a broker.
The Realtor simply cannot know all the details about a house that an owner who has lived there many years does. The car salesman, if he does know of prior damage or faults, will often try to hide or sugar-coat them, or just play ignorant.
Usually, an honest owner will divulge things that could probably use attention or repair.
It’s the same with an animal. The owner who has raised the dog nearly all its life will likely have old vet records, actual birthdate, and probably even the dog’s favorite toy or blanket to help make the transition a bit less stressful. Toys and blankets and favorite foods simply get trashed at a shelter, and it’s rare that any shelter dog comes with papers of any sort, other than a brief checklist the person surrendering the animal filled out.
If the person “found” the dog or only had it a short time, that checklist is not much better than a birdcage liner.
Shelter dogs so often are plagued with diarrhea, due to the in-attention to previous diet and an immediate change to the shelter’s preferred feed (usually the cheapest available). Then you take the dog home, and they don’t bother telling you what they’ve been feeding, and you feed yet another brand… Bingo- diarrhea again!”
Serious, responsible dog and cat breeders also know their animals lineage forward and backwards, they know the characteristics and traits of the animals they breed, they do NOT do what we call “fad breeding” (we see this a lot in horses too) which can and sometimes does negatively impact a dogs conformation, their disposition (because some of this fad breeding changes their conformation and they begin to have physical issues at a younger age which can change their temperament because they are in pain), the way they move and travel and what they can do physically, etc.
These breeders ARE taking good care of their dogs, they follow the rules and regulations, they are open to surprise visits from animal control and other agencies inspections if they are licensed, and although they may not have the “showplace” some dog breeders have, their property IS in compliance with their licensing requirements, it is functional above the basic requirements, and these breeders are doing nothing wrong, and probably are doing most everything right other than satisfying some peoples image of “what” a dog breeders, or any species-specific animal breeders, property *should* look like.
It is also ludicrous to think there can be “across the board” standards regarding what a property or facility “should” look like, and it can vary widely in different regions in the same state, and certainly in different states around the country regarding what is a critical need for the animals, and what is just for “show”, “image”, and “first impressions”.
“Seizure Scams” and Getting Purebred Dogs (and other animals) For FREE:
All it takes with the money, power, control, and accolade-hungry donation-funded ‘rescue’ (term used loosely) is for them to get some photos that they KNOW will NOT measure up to “the standards” (whatever they are, but these ‘rescues’ KNOW how to “push the right buttons” to ramp their supporters into an emotional equivalent of piranha’s feeding on a body in the water) of their followers who may, or may not have dogs, if they do have dogs its usually a few that they bring in the house and they sleep on the bed, they have never dealt with dogs with “issues” that perhaps do NOT want to be house dogs (we have a few of those that have to be given Bach’s Rescue Remedy when we bring them in the house if the temps drop too low), etc, and they incite them into aggressive behavior.
This begs the question: are we as human beings really all that ‘civilized’, or is all it takes is a master manipulator/swindler at a “rescue” (and since we don’t have any background information on most of these rescues founders and primary players because they refuse to answer questions, and they also tell so many stories to different people that are fictional, this is why questionnaires MUST become a requirement) to play to their emotions and they are “de-civilized” into their baser human nature?
The breeders that are most often attacked by donation-funded “rescues” are those who do NOT have a super nice place, it may even be a bit ‘ramshackle’ but it still meets the requirements set forth to be approved for, and maintain their licensing, and the ‘rescue’ knows they can ramp up a “social media madness mob” very easily.
Make no mistake however; their bottom-line and goal is to TAKE those dogs for FREE, use the churning-with-indignation-and-furious anger-mob and thousands of dollars in FREE donation money to do it, and then they “sort” the dogs (calling it “evaluating”), kill the ones who have exhausted their “sympathy/pity-donation value”, and blame it on the owner that the dog was “neglected” and “we had to euthanize them”, even when they were NOT neglected at all.
The other purebred dogs are SOLD under the guise of “adoption for a fee”, the rescue pockets the money (and since they refuse to publically post ALL of the vet reports, we can only assume at this point that the dogs are often NOT being looked at by a vet at all, and they ARE pocketing the money).
THIS SCAM is exactly why we need accountability and full disclosure requirements to become a REQUIREMENT for ALL primarily donation-funded rescues that are also usually adoption-based too, because as long as it’s not, these “rescues that aren’t” will continue to profit GREATLY in what is supposed to be NON-PROFIT.
HELP As a 1st Course of Action by Rescues:
Instead of harassing people into surrendering their animals, or doing seizures, (and a REAL rescue, even one that is primarily donation-funded, will always try to offer HELP for the animals and their owner right at their own property as a 1st course of action), how about if these donation-funded rescues take in every free dog, cat, horse, or whatever animals are being offered on Craigslist because things may not turn out too well for them unless a rescue takes them in? Why don’t they do that? BECAUSE that is not a “crisis rescue” and the collection of free donation-money is not ENOUGH by a long shot.
And although they can feel good they did a nice thing for some animals, for many of the donation-funded adoption-based rescues, their bottom line is the collection of FREE $$$ like the good (NOT!) little “welfare rescues” and pan-handlers they are, and even though the accolades and warm cuddles’ are the icing on the cake, or the cherry on top, they don’t pay the bills, or buy material things that are of ultra importance to many of these “retail rescues” that are donation-funded, and can only operate from the generosity and kindness of others from the collection of donations, material goods, and least we not forget, donations also help them “freshen-up the merchandise” with the acquisition of more and more animals they can sell that they would NOT be able to take care of with their own money because most of the founders, and many of the primary participants with these types of ‘rescues’, do NOT have jobs “outside of rescue” and “rescue IS their job”……good work if someone’s willing to be a swindler that will NOT answer questions because they don’t (yet) have to.
Back to the ‘Rescues’ Often PREPOSTEROUS Adoption Contracts:
And besides the sometimes very high adoption fees, the adoption contract and agreement are so intrusive, long-reaching into the future, and some are even downright condescending and treat potential adopters like they are imbeciles, they are unbearably ABSURD in MANY cases because they FAVOR the ‘rescue’.
Accountability and Full Disclosure Questionnaire to Weed-Out the ‘Players in Rescue’ (and also the publics willingness to send it to rescues and get answers):
Before anyone donates or “adopts” (buys) an animal from a donation-funded adoption-based rescue, please send the accountability and full disclosure questionnaire located to them to find out if they will voluntarily answer questions and send the completed questionnaire back to the sender.
Here’s the questionnaire: Accountability and Full Disclosure Questionnaire-A Necessity
Most of these types of rescues will not even fill out only Page 2 which pertains to basic information about the rescue that they should have NO PROBLEM disclosing if they are “for real”.
And answering the actual questions on Pages 6-10 has only a miniscule chance of being answered and returned to the sender.
Whether they fill it out or not is really NOT the point however.
The questionnaire is simply a starting point to build a case for the AG’s office that it needs to be a REQUIREMENT and NOT voluntary.
And it also serves the purpose of EXPOSING those ‘rescues’ who will NOT answer QUESTIONS.
If they will not answer SIMPLE questions when asked, what intelligent person would send them money and/or support them?
If on the other hand the donating public and also supporters and followers of rescues can’t be bothered to at least ASK questions, then when you find out your “favorite rescue” is in fact simply a bunch of scammers and a den of thieves who treat animals as “merchandise” to be bartered, sold, and often killed if they are not useful and useable anymore, you have only yourself to blame for not being more pro-active because you were afraid to find out the truth, you didn’t want to take the time to send a simple file to a rescue, humane society, spca, or animal control that “partners” with one of these entities, you didn’t have time, or “whatever”.
As it is now, its nearly impossible to know which donation-funded rescues/organizations are on the up-and-up because there literally are no requirements besides filing their tax forms to the IRS.
The much more important questions of exactly WHERE are all of the animals they have rescued using donated funds are, the public posting of the vet reports seeing as most of these donation-funded rescues make it sound like they either are taking animals to the vet everyday, or in the case of large animal mobile vets, it sounds like the vet must sleep on the couch at the “rescue” so they can get an early start of examining and evaluating horses.
The BIG problem with this picture is that MOST rescues show very few, if any, vet reports, even when asked to in PM’s, emails, or public comments on their Facebook pages. They show very few, if any, euthanasia reports. They show few, if any, vet bills, and on it goes of them only doing “photo op’s”, “staged photos”, they write their more fiction than fact posts, but the important information never sees the light of day.
“Dialing for Donations aka “Panhandling for Dollars”:
Then there’s also the problem of them constantly begging and panhandling for donations from the public, they bring in more, and more, and more animals all the time, but their adoptions, their euthanasia’s don’t even come close to how many animals they’ve “rescued”, which then begs the question “where in the hell ARE ALL of the animals”? We want a list of WHERE all of the animals the “rescue” has “rescued” in the past year ARE at this very moment, and we want it NOW.
Introspection for the Public and WHY They Help Rescue:
Perhaps some introspection will cause people to think long and hard before they complain about the “who”, “what”, “why”, “when”, and “where” in relation to donation-funded animal rescues. Unless you ASK the questions, even knowing and anticipating the questions will not be answered, it puts you a step ahead when filing complaints with various government entities including the AG’s office, the IRS, the FBI, the Taxation Board, etc because you will have factual PROOF you did ASK questions and the rescue would NOT answer.
Most people will not offer the answers on their own, no matter how NOT transparent and NOT accountable they turn out to be, or how transparent and accountable they surprisingly are once the questions are asked.
They are actually PROUD to be the good gals and guys in animal rescue, doing the tough job of real rescue, and they will answer questions posed to them in order to win the publics TRUST and set themselves apart from other “rescues that aren’t”.
And before anyone thinks you’re being picked on, you actually are if you’re not willing to be the sleuth and detective at least asking for the whereabouts, and inquiring about the well-being of ALL of the animals that are supposed to be “rescued” but often are not rescued at all because the rescue killed them if they had “issues” that made them unadoptable with or without a fee, and they had also run-through and exhausted their “donation-value”.
Are many of these very public and very vocal donation-funded rescues/organizations making a boatload of money? Yep, some sure are, and its important to find out if they will post their financials seeing as they have a chance to list they will pay themselves and others salaries when they file with the IRS, and if they didn’t that way, then the public they are always asking for money from is entitled to know where every penny of that money is being spent, on WHO, on WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE.
So why doesn’t the donating and supportive public get on the same page, ask questions without combativeness, and if these rescues/organizations ignore you, or if they won’t fill out the information that is being politely asked for and instead they go on the attack on the sender of questions, then ALL of that can be posted publically, as well as sent into the AG’s office, the IRS, and also the taxation board, seeing as some of these animal rescues are actually *also* breeders and/or sale consignment facilities where they sell animals on a commission basis. THAT can be a CONFLICT of Interest, very well could have funds being co-mingled, and that is against the law.
Please be proactive in at least asking the questions as a starting-point for accountability and that way it can be proven the questions were asked, but the rescue chose NOT to answer, and that looks very shady indeed.
Why People Don’t Ask Questions; And Why They Should If They Are An Animal Lover:
People often don’t ask questions because they may be ignored by a rescue they support and/or have donated to, or they are afraid of the answers they may get not being true when fact-checked and verified. THAT would be a huge hit to a stalwart supporters trust and faith in the rescue, so to avoid the disappointment, some people become what are called “true believers” or “enablers” instead. Without knowing the facts and truth of their favorite rescue, they instead prefer to staunchly defend them, harass and threaten people for them, and sometimes even find themselves in court because of them regarding committing defamation, libel, slander, cyber-bullying and harassment, etc.
In other words, their defense of the rescue, or going on the offense/attack for the rescue, can have much farther reaching repercussions than they might have imagined.
With social media marketing being entirely free, non-profit animal rescues have p in record numbers. Unfortunately, some, perhaps many of the donation-funded rescues are nothing more, and nothing less than two bit con-artists fleecing the public with the help of “enablers” who will not ask questions.
So unless the majority of the public make time and put in some effort to ask questions and get answers from any and all primarily donation-funded rescues, the swindlers in ‘rescue’ will ride their gravy train as far and as fast as it will go, and in the end and ultimately, it is ALWAYS the animals who suffer because of the negative human nature traits of greed, over-blown ego’s, selfishness, low morals, and a lack of honor and honesty.
